Curious, playful, chunky, people-aware

More active than adults, but usually not wild. They  like toys, climbing, exploring, and following people. Early handling matters because the breed can become reserved if under-socialized.

Junior / Young Adult

Confident, calm, independent

This is when the “British” personality starts showing: affectionate but not needy, loyal but not clingy, usually not a lap cat. They often want to sit near you rather than be carried. Purina describes them as easygoing, affectionate, not needy, and often disliking being carried.

Senior

Quiet, routine-loving, affectionate on their terms

Seniors usually become more settled and predictable. They may play less, sleep more, and prefer soft spaces, routine, gentle attention, and stable food/weight management. Their calm nature makes them excellent older companions.

Mature Adult

Steady, dignified, loyal

British Shorthairs mature slowly and may take 3–5 years to fully develop physically. They become rounder, heavier, calmer, and more “teddy bear” looking. CFA notes the breed has a dense short coat and that full maturity can take 3–5 years.
